Sub freezing temperatures are coming to Texas with winter weather taking a hold for the latter part of the week which reminds me about preparations WISP's need to make for winter. Here are some tips: 1. Gas the generators. If you have fixed generators at any sites, make sure they are ready to run, that the fuel is fresh and that they will start. 2. Get a portable generator. Most remote sites don't have enough battery to run for long, a cheap portable generator will help. Harbor freight has them for $150. See #1... 3. Get some low cost inverters. You might not be able to afford multiple generators but a few 12 volt inverters will run your tower while you either sit nearby in your warm vehicle and surf the net (sleep) or start rotating 12 volt batteries as they die. 4. Gas you service vehicles. Nuff said. 5. Prepare your customers. Send an email warning them about freezing temps, the three P's (pipes, plants and pets) and then slip in a disclaimer about how the tower that serves them could lose power while they still have power at home, making them believe there's a service issue. They will be more lenient on you if you prepare them. 6. Don't forget your own belongings, cars, antifreeze, pipes, etc. Remember, put your oxygen on first. Have a safe week! |
